Model Airplane Kits Knowledge Base
What's the best website for airplane model kits? I've heard that there are sources for WW1 and WW2 model airplane kits. I'm looking for ones that provide foreign airplane models as well, specifically those of Great Britain, Germany, Italy, and Japan.
Who make the best model airplane assembly kits? I used to make a lot of model airplanes when I was a teenager and would like to get back into it, but this time being more anal-retentive. I used to buy Airfix military aircraft but I found a lot of the plastic was warped. Is there a better company? Thanks. PS. I want to make aircraft from WW2 period.
What is the best website for about Model Airplane Kits information, products and experiences? Hi using Model Airplane Kits is one of my favourite aviation hobbies. I think it would be great if there was a website I could go to which had information about the hobby including various products available, stories from experience and other relevant Airplane topics. I already build various different model airplane's using kits from Revell, AMT (They design, develop and manufacture small gas turbines for the propulsion of a radio controlled flying aircraft) and sometimes Airfix for various Scale Model Kits. I would be really pleased if a website existed where I could go to share my experiences and learn from others and gain knowledge. I will read your answers carefully and take my time as this is a hobby close to my heart. I look forward to hearing all of your answers before carefully selecting the best answer, good luck everyone!
Question about model airplane kits, thinking about beginning to build kits.? Well i am 14 years old and i am currently thinking about building model airplane kits. a few questions i have are what companies i should consider buying from... If there are certain kits a beginner like me should be looking for... and if i should buy glue together kits or snap together kits, I'm thinking glue together, because snap together sounds much to easy and not as much of a time hog... and lastly if there are other kits to build beside snap together and glues together... oh and i am not interested in RC, i want a plane i can build and put on a stand to revel in it's majestic beauty lol... well your help would very much be appreciated...
question regarding balsa wood model airplane kits? I have been a plastic modeler for 30 plus years and I have always been interested in balsa wood display models but I'm not to familiar with some of basics. Looking at the guillows website and the products they offer I have the following questions 1. when you buy the kits do they come with an outer skin and if not what are you supposed to use to cover the bare wood framing 2. what kind of glue is used to hold them together 3. what tools will be needed to complete the kit I imgine these kits are paintable but not knowing what the skins are made of makes it hard to know if what I have will work or not any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated
There are model airplane kits available from HobbyCraft...? which are like airfix, cost about £15, but can be made as models, or into RC planes if bought with the RC parts (basically by inserting electric, gas or petrol engines)! Does anyone know what companies make these? I saw them in store (quite a collection of them in cardboard boxes about 60cm by 15cm by 10cm) last week and forgot the manufacturers name! *doh* Heya! Thanks for the info, but I like building stuff and doing the electronics rather than flying etc. For instant, I built a matchstick model boat (of my own design) recently and fitted up to be rc, after a test it went on the shelf to make room for my next project!
I need pieces for model kits.? I've gotten some 1/72 scale model airplane kits off e-bay and need to find pieces for them. Canopies for both a Matchbox Westland Lysander and a Pioneer 2 Fokker D. XXI. Are these British companies still replacing missing parts? If so, what are their addresses? Or does anyone have either of these canopies? Thanks. Todd
Whats the Best brand for model airplane kit? The ones with the best detail and construction for 1-72 airplane kits ( Mainly looking at military aircraft )...The plastic ones you glue together and sometimes paint... not the wooden ones ... some examples are Academy, Italeri, Revell.. I was considering to buy some since i have lots of time during the summer and would like the greatest detail ... thx~
Tools for airplane model kit? Okay the last question... What basic tools do you need for a good looking airplane from a kit(plastic ones with the construction and gluing and painting ) a ( 1 - 72 ) examples : glue, paint... but be specific... and if possible can you list, in the different paragraph, advance tools for airplane model
What is a good place to sell my completed and detailed model kits?I'm 16.? Hi. I'm 16, and over the years I've compiled numerous finished model kits, ranging from 1/72 small airplanes, to huge 1/32 airplanes. These kits are so detailed, that if you look inside their glossy well-painted body, you'll see that the cockpit buttons are even realistic. People sell these models on ebay for hundreds, but I can't use ebay, being 16. Is there a good place to sell these models?
How can i paint a model kit I just bought? A few days ago I bought an airplane model kit but I'm not sure if i have to build it and then once built i paint it or if i have to paint each piece separately, or if it doesn't matter. I already read the instructions but it says nothing about how to paint it, so if anyone knows please answer. Thanks! Scale 1:72, model f-22 raptor, gears down. I saw a video were the man who was painting the model used a brush. Can i use a brush or does it has to be an airbrush or spray?
I want to buy my dad a model airplane? Apparently before I was born, my dad loved to build model air planes. He's an air plane nut and knows all the minuscule details about them. The problem is, I don't know jack about that stuff, my dad doesn't like gift certificates, and I want it to be a surprise. Any tips for buying him a good model air plane kit?
Building A Flying Model Airplane? I want to build a small model airplane like an R/C type. However, I want it to fly not just be a model. How would I do this without a kit or a hobby shop for pre-made parts. Also what math is involved to figur out how much lift I need and stuff like that. Thanks.
Where to buy model kits of famous buildings, monuments, etc.? I know many people have already posted questions about model airplanes, models for science projects, and so on...But I was wondering if anyone out there knows of a decent online store where I could purchase scale models of world renowned buildings/monuments. For instance: The White House, The Pentagon, Golden Gate Bridge, Big Ben, Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament, Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, The Taj Mahal...you get the general idea. NO 3D PUZZLES, PLEASE. They're a lot of fun too, but I'd prefer more of a challenge. I would like wooden or brick and mortar models, but plastic is okay too. Thanks in advance for any answers!
Is there a store or service or something that will build model airplanes for you? My 10-year-old son recently bought a build-it-yourself model airplane kit, and he's spent the last five months or so building it piece by piece, painting all the emblems and such onto it, sometimes for hours at a time. He completed it about a week ago. Yesterday, I got so angry at my wife that I picked up the plane and threw it at out the window. It landed on the sidewalk and completely broke. My son doesn't know yet, and he's in tears thinking he lost it. Is there anywhere I can go that will build a new copy, or where I can buy a ready-made version?
Where is a good place to buy model kits? I used to be really into building models as a kid, had the complete Testors line with the airbrush kit, the whole works. I mainly built cars and airplanes, but also built some movie models (Star Trek and Star Wars models mainly) as well as some Movie Monster figurines. Anywho, 20 years later I'd like to get into it again. However, I used to buy my models from Toys R Us and a couple hobby shops. Nobody really carries models anymore (except for specialty stuff like Gundam figurines and such that don't interest me), I've checked all the places around me and they don;t have anything... So where can I go to find a good selection of model kits? Classic brands like Ertl?? I've done a few searches online but I never really found any one place that has a good selection, only Mom and Pops with a small selection. Do they still make model kits? Is there an online store that keeps a wide variety of models in stock? Also, supplies, such as the testors paints, glues, sandpaper...all the stuff, I need to buy all new again as my mom pitched all my stuff years and years ago after I moved out D= Thanks for any help...
Logic puzzle help? Please? Match up first names with last names along with the present they gave. Sharon had a birthday party, and among her friends who attended were Angela, Carlotta, Elias, Harold, and Igor, whose last names are Durwood, Foreman, Kramer, Lansdowne, and Nardon. The gifts they gave Sharon were a book, a game, a jigsaw puzzle, a model airplane kit, and a record album. Match up everything from the clues below. 1. Elias didn't give Sharon a record album. 2. One of the girls thought Igor was kind of strange for giving Sharon a model airplane kit, but Sharon said she'd wanted one for a long time. 3. Durwood asked Nardon if he thought Sharon liked the gift she gave, which wasnt a game. 4. Foreman was pleased by Sharon's smile when she saw his gift. 5. The girl who gave Sharon the book, who isnt Angela, asked Kramer if he'd read it. 6. Igor and Foreman started to put Nardon's gift together, but Nardon and Sharon made them stop. Thanks.
Does anybody know this song? Hi, All I can remember about this song is the video clip, basically its about this family (father, mother, and a son who's about 11 years old) who live in the hills. The son has a model airplane kit and throughout the music video he is constructing the model airplane by himself. By the end of the video the airplane is finished (it's an orange glider if I remember correctly) and then he goes outside to fly it. At some point in the music video I think there's these 2 or 3 guys dressed in silver who are standing on a cloud or something, I cant remember all that well but it will be greatly appreciated if anyone can please list the title and artist of this song. Thanks in advance. =]
Do kids still build model airplanes, cars, ships? Or is it just old guys now? I'm thinking primarily of plastic kits, like I built when I was a kid, but also wood (for ships and balsa for planes) and/or metal, etc, etc. etc. I know there are a lot of Lego sets and Zoobs and magnent construction sets and so forth. Do kids build airliners (737, 777, A320, A380, etc) or jet fighters (F/A-18E, F-15C, Su-27, Harrier) or cars (Mustangs! New Beetles, Honda Civics)? Thanks.
Is there value in models (airplanes, boats, planes, sci-fi) that have been completed? I have a family member who recently passed away who was an avid model builder (from kits). His collection includes models of varying sizes & genres- from replica military equipment (planes, tanks, boats/carriers) to models from Star Wars, & all the different Star Trek series. Is there a market out there to sell these models? If so, who should we contact to appraise/sell them?
RC model plane fuel and radio? I am considering buying a rc model kit plane. the kit is a great planes piper cub 20. It was recommended to use a "O.S. 15LA Non-ring 10G Carburetor 871 Muffler", this is from america, but could anyone tell me if the fuel in the UK would work in this engine? As i comes with 10% airplane fuel. But in the UK it is 16% Also should i buy the radio and servos from america as it is cheaper or should i get it in the UK? Is there a difference in the voltage or is it batteries used?
Want a P-51 Mustang RC model? I'm looking for a birthday present for my boyfriend who's an airplane nut (he's also an engineering grad student). He wants an RC airplane kit; he liked looking at the old P-51 Mustangs when we went to AirVenture this year so I was thinking of a model of one of those. Can anyone recommend a good one? Thanks. Since he's an engineer he likes building stuff, so preferably a kit and not a "ready-to-fly" one.
"Hobby Master" Die Cast kits? That honey of mine is a nut when it comes to airplanes. The problem is he's not that handy (when it comes to building stuff!!) so I want to get him a gift that won't require much skill in assembly. I've seen ads for die-cast aircraft kits by a company called "Hobby Master" - does anybody have any experience with these? How hard are they to build in comparison to say a 1/72 plastic model kit? Is glue required? All helpful responses are appreciated.

Missing Parts Question...HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!? I have a model kit of an airplane that's about 90 percent complete. I have not worked on it in over a year. I broke it out today cause I plan to finish it soon, and discovered a major part is missing. Without the part the kit is basically ruined. Who can I call that might be able to find me this part at a low cost???
Questions about building an Ultralight airplane? I would love to build one of these things, but I was curious about a few things: 1) How much money can I expect to spend (plans, parts, tools, etc.) for a fairly basic model? 2) How much time will it take an average person with little experience in this type of area? 3) How much money will it cost me to get some professional instruction about how to fly it? 4) What do you think would be a good kit for a newbie? Thanks guys!!
Model RC airplanes UK? Hi there, I'm looking to buy someone a cheapish but good quality RC airplane for a birthday. Up to £30. Ideally I'd like to buy them the full kit which they can build themselves but comes with the transmitter, battery, engine etc... Does any one know of any where online that I can buy from or a shop within the Midlands? This man is going to be 34 so a little kiddy one will not do. Although he's never done this before he does pick these things up very quickly. Many thanks in advance.
Are there any RC Helicopter Kit that doesn't come assembled? I've been trying to find an rc helicopter/submarine/airplane/etc... kit that doesn't come pre-assembled. In essence, I'm trying to search for something rc that comes with all the parts (motors, servos, remote control etc.) and maybe a video camera for the rc model. Price range from 0-$500
Copyright Legal Question? I would like to re produce some copyrighted plans for a model airplane. The company who drew up the original plans for the kit sell these plans to other therefore if I provided them for free I would be breaking the copyright law. However I am wondering how legal it is to completely re-draw these plans using Autocad, alter them slightly so that they would be similar but not the same, and then distribute these for free. What is the legality of altered plans that have been redrawn?
Sanitization of history? What do you think of this? I see examples of this from time to time. Personally it irritates me. One example comes to mind. Sometimes I build model airplanes (yea, I'm a geek-it's peaceful though). I notice the kits no longer include the swastika for the Nazi aircraft. That makes this hisotical representation innacurate. I also notice this with the Confederate battle flag sometimes. I just feel that history should be represented as it was, for better or worse. I believe that if something was "bad" or inappropriate we should know how to recognize it, not erase it from our memories for the sole purpose of not offending. I realize I interjected my opinion and may have loaded my question. I'm just curious to read what people think about this subject. What is your opinion? Talk amongst yourselves...
Should I buy this? I was looking on ebay at build it yourself airplanes, and I found this one..For 9 bucks, I dont think it's too bad. Want to buy my first R/C Airplane? I am an absolute beginner in the RC model world, and while I have at times flown real aircraft have no idea how to fly a RC model. I am looking to buy a model aircraft, I need advice on a beginners model perhaps a powered glider? To learn on I would like it to be easy to build/fly but not to look like a child’s toy (a bit of an ego thing). If you can think of any RTF or ARTF KIT’s (including all the extras i'l need) you have that meet my spec. BIG THANK YOU
A few questions about building an Ultralight airplane? I know this is engineering (which will soon be my major btw :)), but I figured I would have a good chance of finding someone who's built one of these before in this section. Anyway, here's my questions: 1) How much money can I expect to spend (plans, parts, tools, etc.) for a fairly basic model? 2) How much time will it take an average person with little experience in this type of area? 3) How much money will it cost me to get some professional instruction about how to fly it? 4) What do you think would be a good kit for a newbie? Thanks guys!!
Science Project Question? I'm doing a science project and I need to make a model aircraft that comes in a kit. Which aircraft should I do-Which 1 is the most interesting: Jet airplane Propeller airplane Glider Hot-Air-Balloon Space Shuttle Helicopter
Smokers...have you heard of "e-cigarettes" or "e-smoking"? there are these new devices out that are really starting to catch on in the US now with are called "electronic cigarettes". They look just like real cigarettes (the new mini models anyway), and they satisfy all of the major parts of smoking (inhalation of "smoke", or water-vapour anyway, taste, nicotine, etc) but they are super-healthier than smoking real cigs. Essentially, all you are doing is inhaling water vapour, artifical flavoring, and small doses of nicotine...that's is. No 3,000 chemicals, no tar, no ashtray mouth, no actual "smoke" either... I just got my NPRO starter kit today from njoy.com, and I gotta say, it's freaking awesome. It's a totally legit full-simulation of smoking. Furthermore, you can do it anywhere (offices, restaurants, even on an airplane or in a hospital for god's sake!), as it doesn't technically violate any smoking or tobacco laws (there is no tobacco or flame or anything). My starter kit cost about $100.00, but evidentally there are other websites besides the official "njoy" company one (I went with them cause of their warranty and 30-day trial, etc) where you can get basically the same thing for alot cheaper. If you're looking to try to quit but nothing seems to work for you (like it never really did for me), give this thing a shot. (Sorry that this isn't really a question...more like advice...but I'm just so jazzed on this freakin thing!)
