Aircraft Wing Construction: How are wings attached to the aircraft body? How can they withstand the stress? Consider a huge aircraft like the Boeing 747 - when it takes off it weighs hundreds of tonnes and the wings also have the engines on them! How are the wings made so strong and how are they attached to the main fuselage? Are they welded or bolted on? I know that for eg. An Airbus the wings are shipped as separate parts that are assembled together with all the other components that make up the entire plane, so they are attached separately!
Where can I find bank repossessed aircraft? I am a private Single Engine pilot who aspires to own an private aircraft someday. Like the majority of us, I cannot afford to buy my own aircraft, let alone the cost of up-keep, annuals, tiedown fees, etc. Ultralights are affordable, but not practical for decent cross countries. New LSA, forget it, too expensive. Homebuilts are very appealing, but I want to fly now, not 10 years from now. A lot of used homebuilts seem to cost way too much. I live on a active duty military E-5 pay, so I live and fly cheap. I rent at the flying clubs convenience, which is not always convenient! I know that occasionally people slip and cannot afford their aircraft. I know repo's happen. Would a bank repossesses aircraft be cheaper to purchase? What sources can I use to locate one? Is there a decent website, Newsletters, or point of contact I can utilize?
What determines the amount of speed a turning aircraft loses? I'm trying to model characteristics of various aircraft for a WWII air combat game, and need to know how turns affect speed for various aircraft profiles; ex, light aircraft like the Japanese ki-27 Nate or Zero vs heavier aircraft like the F4F Wildcat or P-40 Warhawk. Thanks. All the answers so far have been helpful. Nobody mentions weight as a factor - so I assume that given the same bank, angle of attack, etc, a heavy plane will decelerate at the same rate as a light one?
Aircraft that ushered in a new era of materials technology. What do you think? My mate and I were having a discusion the other day about the materials used in Aircraft, specifically which aircraft marked the most important breakthrough in aircraft materials development. I argued the SR-71. What plane do you guys reckon was/is the most important in the short history of aviation? Yea but for what the SR71 was designed for and achieved, no other aircraft can match it, therefore is/was a breakthrough Yeah, you wouldn't now Neil would you. You would no, however, ur a fat fucker
What aircraft would you purchase if you had just won the lottery? I saw this asked in this forum, but really, what three(3) aircraft would you buy if you won 60 million USD? the top answer will be given a third ownership in my 1/16 scale spitfire (it needs paint).I ask this for those of us who dream of owning and flying a real spitfire!
What aircraft will I be flying on to Skiathos? I will be flying to Skiathos with Thomsonfly in the middle of August from Manchester. Bearing in mind the runway is so short and it's quite a long flight, what aircraft will i be flying on?
What about a 0 gravity aircraft cockpit? Does aerospace engineers and scientist are developing a 0 gravity environment for aircraft cockpits which will totally render g force effects ineffective on pilots? As technology increases the capabilities of aircraft exceeds than that the limitations of human body could handle, as what i saw in movie "stealth", UAV's are built for that purpose, to do some manuevers which a pilot's body is limited to do. Is it impossible to have such technology now? im referring to 0 g force effect cockpits.
How many aircraft are flying over the uk at any one time? From where I live in Epsom Surrey, if the night sky is clear I can often see 10-20 aircraft flying overhead at any one time, a few of them are preparing to land at Heathrow, but most of them seem to be flying at a greater height as they make their way to other destinations. So does anybody know how many planes are flying over the UK at any one time?
What type of non-military aircraft can travel at speeds of Mach 2? Okay, a prospective client answered his cell phone and said he had better not talk 'right now' because he was travelling at Mach 2. He is a pilot, but doesn't have the keys to military type aircraft. So my question is WHAT TYPES of aircraft can fly at speeds of Mach 2 in the first place, at say 30-35,000 feet? Just curious.
Where and How Does a Student Become Aircraft Traffic Controller? My nephew has asked me to research his interest in becoming an aircraft controller. I have never heard of this field being a major in colleges or universities, so I would imagine classes would be connected to major airports. If you are an aircraft controller or you know someone who is, could you offer any advice on how to get into the field. I do know that controllers have to have sharp memories, make flash decisions, be cool under pressure and work with other busy controllers and high tech equipment. How much do beginning controllers make per year, how long is the training, is it a hard profession to get hired into, and is there any open positions when training is completed? Thanks for any and all advice about the profession of aircraft traffic controllers
What happens when you are in an aircraft that breaks the sound barrier? I was out waiting for Space shuttle Atlantis to pass over my work today when we heard the sonic boom, the news said they heard it from San Diego to LA. If it is that loud on ground, how loud is it when you are in the aircraft that does it? If you have been in a military aircraft or other sound breaking barrier machinary, what happens? Does the aircraft move wierd when it happens or what?
Should an Aircraft Captain go down with his doomed plane? Like ocean ship captains are required to go down with the ship! Is is okay for aircraft captains to save themselves than risk their lives helping passengers in a firey crash? Would it be better for them to die in the crash as their career & reputation is going to be over/questioned if they survived the crash?
Gate to Gate computer operated aircraft? Is it possible and would you fly in it? It seems that the possibilty of an aircraft that is soley controlled by a computer (computer system) is very possible. There are already Unmanned Aerial Vehicles flying in the military. Catagory III aircraft have auto-land, which enables the aircraft to land in zero visibility (obviously at Cat III certified runways). Autopilot flies preprogrammed flight paths and approaches. What problems to do you see in this? Would you fly in a piloted-computer controlled aircraft in the future? Something to think about: more than 70% of aircraft accidents occure due to pilot error and not mechanical failure.
Does anyone need aircraft flight manuals? I have some old Boeing aircraft manuals I need to get rid of. Please email me with any questions or suggestions on what I could do with them. I would hate to just throw them away.... Thank you.
What is the most difficult commercial aircraft to control in bad weather? Actually, what type of aircraft, when you get into some heavy wx, winds, rain/snow etc. do you say, "this aircraft is a pig in this type of weather" difficult to handle, constantly needs trim change, etc. also, which type handles the best in bad weather, needs little correction, handles well.. Just curious.
Why do new aircraft designs appear so rarely? Pre WWII DC3s are still in use. Many other commonly used aircraft types like F27s, Boeing 737s, Cessna 150s and 172s are decades old, yet you see very few vintage cars on the road. Silly question but what's the difference?
How to find aircraft work in asia? I'm trying to find work in Thailand or surrounding countries, but only teaching jobs are really available. I'm a aircraft (structures) Tech/mech by trade. I've applied through various agencies to no avail! does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks
How do Stealth aircraft avoid crashing into each other? If they don't show up on radar, they can't track each other's movements. Presumably, they don't send out transponder signals, as this would defeat the whole point of Stealth technology. So if they are flying at night, how do they manage to stay out of each other's flight paths? For that matter, how do they avoid being accidentally hit by other aircraft in the area? Maybe this information is classified....
What is the highest altitude commercial aircraft fly? What is the highest altitude commercial aircraft generally fly? I know I have been in planes that flew between 25,000 and 35,000 ft. It seems that some international flights are on the higher end like 32,000 to 35,000 ft. Does anyone know if there are any regulations on what the highest altitudes allowed are? Are max altitudes any different for aircraft in Canada?
Why are some aircraft engines position differently? The common ones are under the wings, just curious. Why do some big airlines such as b717 position it at the rear? Does it improves the airplane's performance? .. What's the main difference (in terms of aircraft performance, if any) for the 2 very different positions?
Lightest aircraft construction technique? I am going to make a tailplane for an ultralight and I would like to know what is the lightest construction technique for building it. Wood and fabric? Aluminum? Fiberglass? Some combination of those? The aircraft is going to be a gyro so it will have a vne of about 100 mph or so.
What can I do for my aircraft project? So can you give me any ideas or help on what can I do for my aircraft project. It can be anything to do with aircraft or even helicopter. But i have to build something as well in this project so im looking for a project which involves lots of research, making something and presenting it. Any ideas welcomed. Thank You for helping me.
Is the Qantas Aircraft name unique or does it apply to several Aircraft? Does any one know if 'Spirit of Australia' is a single Aircraft or does it apply to several in the Fleet. Was the Aircraft that experienced the RD out of Hong Kong the same 'Spirit of Australia' that lost it's Starboard Winglet to a Blast Fence in June of 06 at JFK? http://www.rankel.net/stephenlauren/planes/qantas.html
Are there any aircraft manufacturers within a day of Louisivlle KY? I am on spring break this week and found out just today that I've got a longer weekend than I'd thought. For a short day trip I wanted to look into a trip to see/tour an aircraft manufacturer. Aside from Kolbe I haven't found any places in Kentucky, are there any? Are there any plants in Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee or Ohio that might be open for a tour?
How is a Aircraft Load Balance Graph drawn or computed? Balance Graph is a allowed Center of gravity range envelope plotted by Aircraft Weight in y-axis against the Center of Gravity in x-axis. This is used to find whether the actual Center of gravity is within the allowed range as defined by the balance graph. John is absolutely right in whatever he had explained. Thanks John.. but we are done with that part. The information am looking for is... on what basis the Balance Graph has been defined by the manufacturer? What is the fundamentals behind it... I mean how the lines forming the Balance Graph Polygon is arrived for different Aircraft Models and for Different Weights?
Can anyone tell me the difference between aircraft engineering and aviation technology? Hello there, I have applied for aircraft engineering in serveral unis 4 this year. I have got a reply from a uni which is gd news but, I have applied there for Aircraft Engineering BEng however they have invited me to do Aviation Technology BSc. Can anyone help me with which course is better? I also would like to know what sort of jobs available with aviation technology, and is which is a higer degree BEng or Bsc? Can anyone please help me? thank you for your time!
Where is the RAT on commercial aircraft? I see little triangular indentations on aircraft, often near the undercarriage. Does this mean that air can be directed to a turbine inside the aircraft if necessary? On this Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ram_air_turbine), I see that it is external. Upon closer inspection of those inlets I see that there is a small flap that seems to control the air entering the aircraft. Is that correct, and is there a switch for the pilot to control it?
Who is answering these aircraft questions? It seems like some of the aircraft answers are so silly, do you think it's young kids answering just to answer? I can't believe real pilots would say some of the answers I see on here. What do you think? Noe, why do you say you didn't get an answer? I see several correct answers to your Contrails question. What are you expecting that they did not include? wow, so many answers. I'm sure many of you are very qualified, and even teenagers can give good answers. I wish all of you the very best. Thanks for the responses.
What kind of aircraft does the army employ? Does the army have any of there own aircraft or are all their aircraft needs fulfilled by different branches? Terry E- You're a complete moron. I'd say more but I think that speaks for itself. I was under the impression that the army utilized c-5's I guess I was mistaken though?
