- The designation 1:400 is a ratio that tells you the size. If one of those real planes was 400 feet long, then this particular model would be 1 foot long. However, none of those planes is that long, so you will need to convert some of the dimensions-height and length-into all inches. (That's assuming you do know that there are 12 inches to a foot.) If the real plane is 100 ft long, that equals 1200 inches. Divide 1200 by 400 and your model will be 3 inches long.
