What is the relationship between anatomical planes and axis?

I am studying anatomy and I have all the different planes of motion memorized, but I don't understand the relationship with the axis? Like what axis a motion is in, in the sagittal plane? That is just an example, I dont understand the relationship with any of them! The only way I know what movements happen in the sagittal, frontal, transverse planes is simply by memorization...I dont understand *why*. When I start trying to answer questions with what axis AND plane a movement happens in, I am totally lost!! Thanks so much, I'm sure I am making this harder than it really is!
