How do I help my 6 yr old nephew cope with planes?

My nephew is obsessed about planes crashing. Everytime he sees a plane in the sky he shouts "oh no! They're going to crash!". I've been telling him that planes don't crash often but he just says that all planes crash. What is the best way to help him cope with planes? I don't want him to be really frightened when we go on a plane trip. I also found out recently that he's scared of being up high. How do i help him so he won't ask "did it crash?" when a plane was taking off?

  2. do the whole "say anything" thing where you tell him once the fasten seatbelt light goes off then the plane can never crash.

  4. Hi I MAY be able to help with your nephew's problem... I can tell you that most planes, when they land, make a controlled crash. It's part of the landing sequence. Take him to an airport to show him how the planes land and hopefully he understands.
  5. I'd say take him to a small airport, (because there is no security and people are friendly) ask around and let people know who you are and what you're doing and most people will be happy to find a pilot and open up some planes and let the boy ask all the questions he wants to people who have all the answers on the subject. He had to have picked it up from some crazy relative or to much watching TV with images and hype about 9/11 and recently baseball players who can't fly. If you email me at mmuffkin@yahoo.com with your city I can reccomend some small airports near you and business's that would allow you to visit the planes and pilots.
